One drug addict is enough to bring down the entire family. A considerable portion of our youth is falling prey to different types of drugs. All the same, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) has taken the bull by horns using all possible methods and means to curb the menace. The force has officers like Riaz Ahmed Soomro who know how to feel the pulse of the society. He is a director whose job is to reduce the demand for drugs in the society. This is the key area requiring complex qualities as it deals with almost all segments of society. I have seen activities of ANF at universities and colleges creating awareness about the horrors of drug addiction among youth and was always interested to meet the brain behind it. Fortunately, documentary maker Ramzan Ali arranged my meeting with Director Soomro in Rawalpindi. To start with, he was very hospitable and respectable personality. He said ANF is cognizant of the fact that our youth is the most vulnerable to drugs addiction. “We study youth habit

It’s a lucrative business!

While action is taken against them from time to time, the number of people begging for alms is increasing. Pakistanis are known to be generous to a fault as far as giving to charitable causes goes but this doling out is not the right way to do it as it encourages the able bodied and lazy to cash in on what is the right of those who genuinely need help. Begging is a lucrative business. Some time back an investigative report made for eye-opening viewing, revealing the facts about organized gangs which have men, women and children working under a 'boss' just like any organization and having to answer to him if they don't give the desired results. Then there are those who prefer to work alone, the whole family going out to 'earn' their living. As the team followed some beggars around recording what they observed, they captured scenes of 'lame' men and women getting up and walking away; of the blind suddenly being able to miraculously see their way about and co

‘Check your consumption to reduce climate impact’

Islamabad :Citizens can play significant role in drastic reduction in the climate impact by reducing consumption of mechanically produced goods and industrial products, and reducing carbon footprint by monitoring their consumption patterns. The exuberant lifestyle has led us to over consumption of products inorganically or industrially produced, hence putting more pressure on the natural resources either as input to the production or disposing off the industrial waste. Devcom-Pakistan Director Munir Ahmed made these remarks in an interactive session with the business undergraduate at the School of Business Management, Quaid-e-Azam University, here on Saturday. Theme of the interactive session was “citizens’ role in reducing climate impact”. He said the unchecked global warming over the decades has changed the climate to the point where we have starting facing the brunt of it. Comedy, action in plenty

Director: Jake Kasdan Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Karen Hart, Jack Black, Danny Devito Columbia Pictures Jumanji-The Next Level came out this week. This is a sequel to Jumanji from 1995 and 2017. It is an adventure comedy, at times sticking to the original, and, at times, slipping away too far. We have grandfather Danny Devito recovering from surgery, a warlord killing parents, a magic necklace, drought, snowy mountains and crime syndicate as major ingredients of plot. Things revolve around exploring unexplored video games. The film has been looked down for having no relevance to our life, with too many characters, making the plot messy. It also reminds us of what we have seen before( Raiders of the Lost Ark to The Lord of the Rings). However, it carries both comedy and action in plenty and should keep the young audiences involved with locations from Atlanta, New Mexico, Hawaii coupled with computer generated effects at a neat budget of $125 million. The film offers new twists and turns e

Low gas pressure puts a damper on winter joy

Bigoted India: Be like me — open & normal Pakistan

India is increasingly undercutting itself politically, economically and socially as it erupts in violence, mob frenzy and economic meltdown. As if brutalities against Kashmirs in IOK and denying citizenship to millions of Muslims in Assam, were not enough, the Indian government took a major step to discriminate Muslims through its Parliament’s piece of legislation called Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) virtually completing India’s sleepwalking into becoming a “Rashtra”— a Hindu revisionist state. At the heart of Modi government’s strategy is to appeal to its Hindu extremist political base subscribing to Hindutva Ideology of Hindu supremacism. The Parliament’s CAA move comes on the heel of the Modi government’s NRC decision. The NRC practically deprives people who can’t prove citizenship as per its criteria hence cease to be Indian citizens costing property rights, bank accounts, government jobs, rations/subsidy, LPG connections and phone lines. To have all these facilities, the first cr

Masses without true leadership

“If there were leaders like Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Shaheed-e-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan and Masud Khadarposh, there would have been no chaos in the mind of the common people even today—- no anger and no confusion among consumers about roti, clothing and shelter ,” this is how the elder citizens react to their party leaders. One of the basic problems soon after the establishment of Pakistan was roti. An active supporter of Khaksar Movement chief Allama Enayatullah Khan al-Mashriqi set up a hotel in well-known Paisa Akhbaar Street of Lahore. The unique slogan—‘one anna roti, daal mufat’(six paisa only for one roti and masoor pulse ) attracted hundreds of lower middle and poor segments of the city every day. That was a symbol of humanitarian approach towards solving the roti problem of the people of the area. When people of rural and urban areas came to learn about the manifesto and its popularity they joined the organisation. They realised Allama Mashriqi and his programme woul

Screening of ‘Sacch’

Aijaz GulFilm ‘Sacch’, which opened nationwide on December 20, is a family production in the real sense of term.Produced by Zulfiqar Shaikh - Tasmina Sheikh, directed by Zulfiqar Shaikh and female lead played by their daughter Elysee. Could there be more ‘family collaboration’ in a film! I doubt it.Zulfiqar Shaikh enjoys credit for several TV productions. Film and TV heartthrob Danish Taimoor, now busy in distributing prizes on TV competition shows, was earlier signed and even publicized on posters as the lead, was dropped out. Seems like he was not comfortable with ‘All in the family’ reunion here. Like most of our films (Read: Every Film), ‘Sacch’ is loaded with romance. Several locales for love songs give you picture postcard rich lush green scenery of Scotland. In fact the entire films has been lensed there. The story is spread over more than two decades, based on a love triangle with riches and poverty.
