Indian Congress-NC alliance to restore occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood rights, says Congress spokesperson

Indian Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera on Monday said that the Indian Congress-National Conference alliance “will restore Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) right to statehood.” The Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced that assembly elections in India-held J&K will be conducted from Sept 18 to Oct 1, setting the stage for the first major electoral exercise in the disputed region since its dismemberment in August 2019. The poll schedule was announced a month after the Modi government had widened the scope of the held J&K lieutenant governor’s (LG) powers from police and public order to postings and prosecution sanctions. The opposition had condemned the move calling it the step to rendering the chief minister in held J&K “powerless” and disempowering the region’s people. While speaking to ANI, Khera said that the state of held J&K was “a state whose rights were taken away, statehood was taken away, it was made a Union Teritory” urging that the state

Capital buzzing on a Sunday as ‘constitutional package’ likely to be tabled in NA, Senate today

In what is an unusual development for a Sunday, both the National Assembly and Senate sessions will convene today one after the other, with the highly anticipated but closely guarded ‘constitutional package’ expected to be on the agenda. It is unusual for parliament to convene on a weekend, as it usually only happens in budget sessions or sittings convened for a specific, time-sensitive issue. The package aims to fix the tenure of the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) at three years among other things. --- Key meetings ahead of parliamentary sessions * PM Shehbaz met elder sibling and PML-N supremo Nawaz * Govt delegation meets JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman * FM Dar and Co meet MQM leaders --- Today’s NA session was initially slated for 11:30am but then changed to 4pm on a Special Parliamentary Committee’s request made to the NA speaker. However, the session was unable to start even at the revised time as meetings between the govt and political p

Imran claims Gandapur was ‘picked up’ after fiery speech

ISLAMABAD: PTI founder Imran Khan has claimed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur was “picked up” by the military after the Sangjani rally and he is “showing grace” by not speaking on the issue. Mr Khan’s remarks have led credence to the doubts being raised over Mr Gndapur’s whereabouts following his scathing speech at the rally on Sunday. The issue remained shrouded in mystery as PTI leaders, including the KP government spokesperson, feared Mr Gandapur had been taken into custody as they were unable to contact him. According to media reports, the KP CM reached Peshawar on Tuesday and told a party meeting the next day that he was busy with official meetings and party leaders couldn’t contact him because of the jammers installed there. Says KP CM showing grace by not divulging details; backs his proposal for direct talks with Kabul In a rather unsavoury riposte, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, while speaking in the National Assembly, quoted media re

Info minister condemns Gandapur’s speech as journalists boycott PTI presser

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Friday denounced the pejorative remarks against journalists made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur at the PTI’s Sangjani power show, as journalists continued to condemn the speech and demanded an apology. In a fiery speech last week during PTI’s rally, CM Gandapur labelled journalists as “sellouts” and “sycophants,” accusing them of caving to pressure from the establishment and the government. Gandapur dared them to “write whatever you want,” claiming he would confront them with the nation’s backing. He also urged his supporters to “identify and expose such journalists” globally, while also using derogatory and sexist language against women journalists. His speech prompted widespread condemnation from journalist bodies, rights groups, and politicians, with the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) asking him to tender an apology for his remarks. PTI founder Imran Khan also said that Gandapur’s words were inappropriate.

US imposes sanctions on suppliers to Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme

The US State Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Chinese research institute and several companies it said have been involved in supplying Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme. The sanctions also targeted China-based firms Hubei Huachangda Intelligent Equipment Co, Universal Enterprise, and Xi’an Longde Technology Development Co, alongside Pakistan-based Innovative Equipment and a Chinese national, for knowingly transferring equipment under missile technology restrictions, Miller said. “As today’s actions demonstrate, the United States will cont

Quetta police official kills man accused of blasphemy while in custody

A Quetta police officer killed a man being held in custody on suspicion of blasphemy charges, police officials said on Thursday. Quetta Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muhammad Baloch said that the police officer accused of the killing had been arrested. The officer had accessed a police station where a man accused of blasphemy was being held by pretending he was his relative before opening fire on him. The man accused of blasphemy had been taken into custody earlier in the week and moved to a more heavily fortified station due to an enraged mob demanding that he be handed over to them. At the time, protesters belonging to the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and other religious parties had blocked traffic on the western bypass by placing burning tyres on the road and staged rallies in several parts of the provincial capital. They later hurled a hand grenade at the Kharotabad police station, which exploded outside the police station. No human loss was reported i

IHC seeks clarity from govt about possibility of Imran’s military trial

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday sought clarity from the federal government regarding the possibility of a military trial for incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan in the May 9 cases. Imran had previously claimed that there was a plan to try him in a military court over countrywide protests that erupted last year after his arrest in a graft case. He had also said that arrested former intelligence chief Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed was being forced to turn approver against him to pave the way for his trial in a military court in May 9 cases. Officials of the federal and the PML-N-ruled Punjab government have issued contradictory statements on whether the process to hold the former premier’s military trial was under way. Speaker Sadiq summons IG, SSP over PTI leaders’ arrests; Barrister Gohar released

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on Tuesday summoned Islamabad’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and the senior superintendent of police (SSP) for arresting PTI leaders within the jurisdiction of the parliament. View this post on Instagram At least 12 PTI MNAs were arrested in addition to another party leader since last night as law enforcement agencies whisked away key leaders from various parts of Islamabad, including the Parliament House. According to a parliamentary rule, police have to inform the National Assembly speaker before arresting any MNA, but the law enforcers did not seek permission from the custodian of the house before arresting the MNAs. Consequently, the speaker summoned IGP Rizvi and the senior superintendent of police (SSP). Earlier today, in a fiery speech on the floor of the lower house, PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan, who appeared emotionally charged, lambasted the arrests of his fellow party leaders
