Gwadar declared calamity-hit, emergency imposed after heavy rains wreak havoc

The Balochistan government on Thursday imposed an emergency in Gwadar and declared it calamity-hit after heavy rains wreaked havoc in the city. Normal life and traffic remain suspended in Gwadar, Makran and northern and central parts of Balochistan as 30-hour-long showers triggered flash floods and submerged most of the areas. According to officials, Gwadar received around 180 millimetres of rainfall over the past two days, disrupting normal life and rendering hundreds of people homeless. Several dozens of human settlements and commercial establishments collapsed as floodwater entered houses, while roads were badly affected. “We have lost our precious households in the floodwater and our houses were not in a position to live in,” Hayatullah Baloch, a resident of Gwadar, told Dawn. In a press release issued today, Balochistan caretaker Minister for Information Jan Achakzai said the provincial government had decided to declare Gwadar calamity-hit and impose an emerg

Sindh govt declares rain emergency, announces half-day for Karachi offices on Friday

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday imposed a rain emergency in the province and declared tomorrow to be half-day for all government and private offices in Karachi. On Wednesday, the Sindh Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) had issued an urban flooding warning and directed the deputy commissioners and all officials concerned to take required measures. According to the advisory issued by the Met Department, rain/thunderstorms with few heavy falls are expected in northern parts of the province from Feb 29 till March 2. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in the rest of the province from March 1. “Heavy falls may generate urban flooding in low-lying areas. Fishermen of Balochistan are advised not to venture in deep sea till March 1 while those of Sindh are advised to remain careful during the forecast period,” it said. Today, the Sindh chief minister chaired a meeting regarding the situation at the CM House. During the meeting, CM

Newly elected representatives sworn in as ruckus mars maiden session of 16th National Assembly

Newly elected members of the 16th National Assembly were sworn in on Thursday in a session marred by mainly pro-Imran Khan sloganeering. Outgoing NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath to the MNAs-elect. The session was originally scheduled to begin at 10am but was delayed by more than an hour. Notable politicians who were sworn in as MNAs included PML-N supremo and former premier Nawaz Sharif, ex-prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Further, three Senate members — PML-N’s Nuzhat Sadiq, JUI-F’s Abdul Ghafoor Haideri and PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani — resigned from the upper house of Parliament in order to join the National Assembly. PTI leaders, some of whom have joined the assembly under the banner of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), were also sworn in. These included Barrister Gohar Khan, Ali Muhammad Khan, Omar Ayub Khan and Sher Afza

Six militants killed in North Waziristan operation: ISPR

PESHAWAR: Six militants were killed, and a soldier sustained injuries in an exchange of fire between security forces and militants in North Waziristan, the military’s media affairs wing said on Wednesday. An ISPR statement said the security forces conducted an IBO on reported presence of militants, adding that intense firing took place during the operation. The statement mentioned that as a result, six militants were killed, while a soldier sustained injuries. “Weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also recovered from the killed terrorists, who remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities, including target killing as well as extortion and abduction of innocent civilians,” it added. ‘Selfless devotion to duty’: COAS lauds Lahore cop for saving woman in Arabic print shirt from mob

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Wednesday lauded Lahore Gulberg Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi for her “selfless devotion to duty and professionalism in diffusing a volatile situation”. On Sunday afternoon, a mob had gathered outside a shop in Lahore’s crowded Ichra Bazaar after someone alleged that a woman’s shirt had Quranic verses printed on it, insisting on a “blasphemy” charge. A video clip on social media showed the girl hiding in a shop and shivering with fear. Sensing the sensitivity of the issue, some police officials present at the site called in their higher-ups. Subsequently, a police team led by ASP Shehrbano engaged the crowd, took the woman into protective custody and shifted her to the police station amid heightened security measures. Later in the day, a video had emerged showing the woman apologising alongside religious scholars. On Monday, the Punjab police chief had recommended ASP Naqvi fo

Ruckus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly as MPAs-elect take oath

In a session marred by ruckus, around 115 newly elected representatives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly were sworn in on Wednesday. The provincial legislature meeting was summoned by KP Governor Ghulam Ali last week following advice from the caretaker Chief Minister Syed Arshad Hussain Shah. The KP Assembly is the third provincial assembly have its members take oath after the February 8 general elections. It should be mentioned that the previous assembly was dissolved in January 2023 and the province had been functioning in the absence of the provincial legislature for more than 13 months. Today’s session was scheduled to begin at 11am. However, it was delayed by over an hour due to protests and riots by PTI workers present in the gallery and party-backed lawmakers — now members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). The session finally began a little after 1pm with outgoing KP Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ghani in the chair. At the outset, he prayed for the high rank

Imran, Bushra Bibi indicted in £190m graft case

A Rawalpindi accountability court on Tuesday indicted former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the £190 million corruption case. Judge Nasir Javed Rana, who has replaced Judge Mohammad Bashir as he is retiring in a few weeks, presided over the hearing at Adiala Jail, where the PTI founder is currently incarcerated. In December, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed a corruption reference against Imran and seven others, including his wife, in connection with the Al-Qadir University. The case alleges that Imran and Bushra Bibi obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd for legalising Rs50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous PTI government. The reference filed by NAB alleged that Imran, who is currently in jail, played a “pivotal role in the illicit transfer of funds meant for the state of Pakistan into an account designated for the payment

Journalist Asad Toor remanded in FIA custody for 5 days in case pertaining to online campaign against judiciary

An Islamabad district and session court on Tuesday granted the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) five-day remand of journalist Asad Ali Toor in a case pertaining to an online campaign against the judiciary. In January, the caretaker government had formed a five-member joint investigation team (JIT) to “ascertain facts behind a malicious social media campaign” against the judiciary in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to deprive PTI of its iconic ‘bat’ symbol. Last week, Toor was interrogated for nearly eight hours by FIA officials on the same matter. The interrogation had taken place despite the attorney general for Pakistan assuring the apex court last month that the FIA would not take action before the general election on the notices sent to journalists. The apex court had adjourned the hearing in the case till the first week of March. Last night, Toor’s legal team confirmed that he had been arrested by the agency. Toor’s counsel Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir said

Two dead in Kalat, Gwadar attacks

KHUZDAR/GWADAR: Unknown armed men gunned down a businessman running a wine store in Kalat town, some 150km from Khuzdar, on Monday evening, while motorcyclists killed a man in Gwadar. Police said that the trader, identified as Leila Ram, was sitting in his wine store when armed men on motorbikes opened fire with automatic weapons, killing him on the spot, while his grandson Kirtan Kumar was injured. Police rushed to the site, shifted the body, and took the injured to the district hospital. The armed men on motorbikes escaped after the firing. “We are investigating the incident,” a senior police officer said, adding that the cause of the killing was not known so far. Punjab Assembly: Maryam becomes Pakistan’s first female CM, says she has no desire to ‘seek revenge’

Amid boycotts and delays, the Punjab Assembly on Monday elected PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz as the first female chief minister of the province and Pakistan. Maryam clinched an overwhelming victory with 220 votes against rival Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). Initially, the SIC — which is now home to the PTI-backed independent candidates who won the general election — had nominated Mian Aslam Iqbal, MPA-elect from Lahore, for the slot. However, it later replaced him with Aftab from Faisalabad, a former PPP jiyala, as Iqbal had not come to the House to take oath as MPA, fearing his arrest by the Punjab police. Ahead of the session today, Maryam first visited her mother’s grave and then arrived at the Punjab Assembly, which was scheduled to convene at 11am. However, the session began almost two hours later than scheduled as the SIC alleged its MPAs were not allowed to enter the assembly premises. When the ball finally got rolling at 1pm, 103 SIC lawmakers sta

Alvi gets flak for sitting on NA session summary

• Dar says outgoing speaker to convene the maiden session if president fails; expects it by tomorrow • PPP, PML-N leaders urge head of state not to abuse powers ISLAMABAD: With only three days left in the constitution-mandated deadline to summon the session of the National Assembly, President Arif Alvi has come under severe criticism from the political parties, particularly the PPP and the PML-N, for resorting to delaying tactics instead of convening the session of the lower house of parliament. Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that a summary requisitioning the session of the assembly was sent to the president by the parliamentary affairs division four days ago, but there has been no official response from President Alvi. A National Assembly Secretariat official said the president was bound to summon the session within 21 days and if he failed to do so, then the NA secretariat could bypass him and summon the session under Article 91(2) of the Constitution. Malik Ahmad Khan, Sharifs’ loyalist from Kasur, and Mr Channar from Bahawalpur defeated the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) nominee Malik Ahmad Khan Bachhar from Mianwali and Moin Riaz from Multan for the speaker and deputy speaker offices, respectively. The PML-N candidates were backed by their allies, the PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), and the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP). Out of the total 322 votes cast in the house, Malik Ahmed Khan secured 224 votes against 96 bagged by Ahmad Bachhar. Two votes were rejected. Zaheer Iqbal got 220 votes and Moi

ECP gears up to hold election for president by March 9

ISLAMABAD: Still coping with the post-poll challenges amid rigging allegations, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is now gearing up to hold the election for the office of the country’s president by March 9, two days before the retirement of half of the senators after completing their six-year term, Dawn has learnt. “The president will be elected by the present senators after setting up of all the four provincial assemblies,” a senior PPP office-bearer said, adding that the election could take place on March 9 or 10. The six-party alliance, set to form a coalition government at the Centre under the PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif, has already announced Asif Ali Zardari as its consensus candidate for the country’s top constitutional office. Mr Zardari previously served as the president from September 2008 to 2013 after the resignation of the military ruler Pervez Musharraf. Six-party alliance has announced Zardari as its candidate for top constitutional office A

Marwat issued show-cause notice for remarks against Gohar

ISLAMABAD: The PTI has issued a show-cause notice to Advocate Sher Afzal Marwat over remarks against PTI leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan that had triggered a controversy within the party. Mr Marwat has been advised to tender an unconditional apology within two days and has been informed that if he did not reply or his reply was unsatisfactory, further action would be taken as per the party policy. Amid wild rumours taking rounds about why the PTI founding chairman Imran Khan did not decide to continue with Mr Gohar as the party chairman, Mr Marwat claimed in a talk show that Mr Gohar was not competent enough to be continued as the party chairman. He claimed that it was the reason the party had decided to nominate Barrister Ali Zafar as a candidate for the chairman’s slot. “Mr Gohar is a gentleman, but his performance was unsatisfactory. A chairman needs to be active all the time,” Mr Marwat said. He said that Mr Gohar got three months but could not perform well

Oath-taking of KP and Balochistan PAs on Feb 28

PESHAWAR: Newly elected members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies will be sworn in on Wednesday (Feb 28), as the governors of both provinces have requisitioned assembly sessions. KP Governor Ghulam Ali has summoned the session following advice from the KP caretaker chief minister, Syed Arshad Hussain Shah. On Friday, the provincial law department requested Mr Shah to advise the governor to convene the provincial assembly meeting. “The chief minister is requested to advise the governor to summon the provincial assembly on a date to be mentioned in the draft order regarding summoning of the provincial assembly,” read an official summary sent by the law department to the caretaker chief minister. On Saturday, the governor signed the summary and summoned the KP Assembly meeting. Sit-ins continue against ‘poll rigging’ in Balochistan

QUETTA: The sit-ins by an alliance of four nationalist parties across Balochistan continued on Friday against the alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections. The protest has been continuing for over two weeks in different parts of Balochistan including the provincial capital, Quetta. Supporters of the four-party alliance continued the sit-in outside the office of the Quetta district returning officer. The demonstrators have set up a camp at the roadside to continue their protest round the clock. Reports from Loralai, Khuzdar, Turbat, Panjgur, Gwadar, Hub, Noshki, Kharan, Kalat, Pishin, Chaman and Qila Abdullah suggested sit-ins have been continuing in these areas. In some areas, traffic was affected on inter-provincial roads, but the national highways which connect Balochistan with other parts of the country have been opened. A public meeting was also held by the alliance leaders in Pishin on Thursday. The meeting was addressed by Mehmood Khan Achakzai,

Move to drag IMF into rigging row panned

ISLAMABAD: PTI’s plan to urge IMF to seek an independent audit of the election results before continuing talks with Islamabad for any new loan backfired on Friday as not only the lender expressed interest in working with the incoming government, but the party also received severe criticism from political forces. Speaking during the Senate session, legislators termed the PTI’s plan “anti-people” and “anti-Pakistan”. Incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan, while talking to reporters in Adiala Jail, confirmed he was planning to write to IMF. He said PTI would write a letter to the IMF against alleged rigging. “We will inform the Fund that due to rigged elections, the investors would not trust the regime and that PTI is seeking a probe into the rigging.” He was of the view that in the prevailing political unrest, new loans would bring more poverty. “Seeking loan without investment will be detrimental to the country’s economy,” he warned, adding that political stability w

Question of ‘SIC reserved seats’ stumps ECP

ISLAMABAD: A decision on whether PTI-backed independents — who are joining the assemblies under the banner of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) — will get reserved seats for women and minorities continues to elude the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). On Friday, even as the commission notified another chunk of returned candidates on reserved seats in the national and provincial legislatures, it appeared that the matter of awarding reserved seats to the SIC-allied PTI bloc had yet to be settled. In its breakup of women’s seats being awarded to parties in the national and KP assemblies, the ECP has listed all PTI-backed independents as members of the SIC. However, the column where the number of seats allocated to them should be mentioned, reads: “Matter is pending before the commission”. The ECP has put on hold the notifications on all the 10 reserved seats for women in the National Assembly from KP and 21 out of total 26 reserved seats for women in the KP Assembly,

Karachi has highest rate of polio vaccine refusal in country, experts say

• Refusals more common in posh areas of metropolis • Vaccine hesitancy identified as a significant barrier to immunisation coverage KARACHI: Highlighting Pakistan’s polio-related challenges, experts at a session held on Thursday identified vaccine hesitancy as a significant barrier to the immunisation coverage, particularly in Karachi, a city with the highest refusal rate for polio vaccination in the country. The problem, it was pointed out, had more to do with people’s attitudes than literacy levels. The experts were speaking at an orientation session organised by Emergency Operations Centre for Sindh (EoC) for journalists at a local hotel. “Surprisingly, refusal is more common in posh areas in Karachi, representing well-off, educated families. In fact, people with lower levels of education show more understanding towards polio vaccination,” Dr Khalid Shafi representing the Pakistan Paediatric Association said, adding that there were many people who were simply dismissiv
