The Supreme Court on Friday allowed incarcerated PTI President Parvez Elahi to contest the forthcoming general elections from PP-32 of Gujrat. A three-member bench headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and comprising Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Justice Athar Minallah overturned the rejection of Elahi’s nomination papers by the Lahore High Court (LHC) and the election tribunal. Elahi, who served as the Punjab chief minister, had filed his nomination for the Feb 8 general elections. However, his papers were rejected by the returning officers, a decision later affirmed by both the election tribunal and the LHC. ISLAMABAD: With only 16 days left in the general elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to conduct a mock test of its system to transmit and tabulate results. The ECP has written to all four provincial election commissioners and issued SOPs and guidelines regarding the mock exercise for the Election Management System (EMS) on January 26. The letter, a copy of which is available with Dawn, stated that returning officers (RO) must certify and finalise Forms 28 and 33 in the EMS and map the presiding officers to polling stations till Jan 25. HYDERABAD: The Accountability Court-II in Hyderabad has stopped the National Accountability Bureau from deducting 25pc of the embezzled funds recovered under plea bargain from two accused in Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway M6 land scam case, and ordered the bureau officials to return the amount to National Highway Authority (NHA) within 15 days. The judge, Mahboob Ali Dayo, who issued the directives the other day, noted that the NHA had sourced the funds from the coffers of taxpayers or through imposition of toll taxes on general public. Hence, the amount rightly belonged to federal government, thereby precluding NAB from asserting entitlement to 25pc share in the principal recovery amount, said the order. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday wrote a letter to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) seeking action against media channels violating the code of conduct for the February 8 polls. The letter, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, stated that it was observed some media channels were airing poll surveys, a practice that is “explicitly prohibited under Clause 12 of ECP’s Code of Conduct for National Media”. According to the said clause, any media person on print, electronic and social media “shall not obstruct the election process and must display their accreditation cards provided by the Election Commission”.
