In effect, the average gas cost for protected consumer slabs (0.25hm3 to 0.9hm3) would jump by up to 300pc, in view of the cumulative impact of higher fixed charges, while their annual bill is estimated to rise by up to 150 per cent. “The federal government… approved increase in the price of natural gas for different categories of the consumers as advised by the Ogra with effect from November 1, 2023,” said a summary issued by the petroleum division after the cabinet meeting. Gas supply may be limited to eight hours a day in winter

ISLAMABAD: The recent surge in gas prices would be instrumental in curbing the gas sector’s circular debt, which has swelled to Rs2,100 billion, Caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali said on Thursday but painted a bleak picture for the coming winter, with gas supply duration limited to just eight hours a day. Briefing the media, Mr Ali said that the current circular debt for the entire energy sector was Rs4,500bn without interest payments and it included Rs2,300bn in the electricity sector. “There will not be a resurgence of the circular debt in the gas sector after the recent increase in gas prices,” he said, adding that the government was working to avoid the addition of further circular debt in the power sector under a commitment with the International Monetary Fund. As for the recent gas price hike, the caretaker minister said there had been no price change during the first half (July to December 2022) of the previous fiscal year. He said the prices did increase in the

IHC rejects Imran’s plea against indictment in cipher case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday rejected PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s petition challenging his indictment in the cipher case. IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq disposed of the former premier’s plea but directed that Imran be provided a “fair trial”. The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document that the charge sheet claims was never returned by Imran. The PTI alleges that the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran from office. The PTI chief was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana graft case on Aug 5. The IHC suspended his sentence on August 29 but he remained in jail because he was on judicial remand in the cipher case. On Sept 30, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had submitted a challan — a charge sheet — in a special court established under the Official Secrets Act naming PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Imran as the principal accused in the case. On Monday, both the PTI leaders were indicted in

Shehbaz, Maryam gear up to make Nawaz’s return historic

LAHORE: PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reached Sheikhupura to mobilise workers ahead of the homecoming of party supremo Nawaz Sharif on Oct 21, but failed to unite two party groups — one led by Chaudhry Tanvir Hussain and the other by Javed Latif.   The outspoken Javed Latif did not turn up in the workers’ convention since it was hosted by Mr Hussain and the former had serious differences with the latter. In the party ranks, Javed Latif is considered to be from the Maryam group and Tanvir Hussain from the Shehbaz camp.  Early this week, Nawaz Sharif had asked his younger brother to immediately resolve differences among some party leaders of Punjab, particularly the Lahore chapter, to make the Oct 21 show successful.  Outspoken’ Javed Latif skips Sheikhupura power show The PML-N had already cancelled at least three rallies in Lahore, planned to build momentum ahead of Nawaz Sharif’s homecoming, in an apparent bid to prevent its workers from getting burnt

ECP rules out massive disenfranchisement in polls

ISLAMABAD: Ruling out reports about a massive disenfranchisement in the upcoming polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday said it had obtained data of 800,000 voters currently out of electoral rolls, from the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on Oct 1, and their data entry was in progress. The ECP made it clear that all of them would be able to exercise their right to vote in the next general elections. Reacting to an analysis by a coalition of civil society organisations, the commission said as Oct 25 was the cut-off date for registration of voters as well as corrections in the voters’ data, all those to be issued CNICs by that date would be enrolled as voters. The commission said the analysis that the ECP data showed some 13m voters would be disenfranchised was contrary to facts and based on wrong information. Says data of 0.8m voters currently out of electoral rolls obtained from Nadra It said under Section 27 of the Elections A

Punjab caretakers order jail trials of May 9 suspects

LAHORE: The caretaker government of Punjab has ordered jail trials of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers for their alleged role in the May 9 riots in different cities of the province, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Mianwali and Faisalabad. The home department on Friday issued separate notifications for jail trials in each of the 31 cases registered across the province. Sources said the decision has been taken in order to maintain law and order and avoid hassle in bringing the suspects to anti-terrorism courts on an almost daily basis. It is easy for the judges to travel to the jail instead of transporting a host of suspects to the courts every day, an official said. Some critics, however, expressed their apprehensions over the transparency of court proceedings inside the jail, as the media is not given access to cover those trials. Critics doubt transparency of court proceedings inside jail, where media won’t have access Joint inve

Sindh CM Baqar unhappy over delay in merger of BRT Orange, Green lines

KARACHI: Despite having bus rapid transit (BRT) system since December 2021, hundreds of thousands of people in Karachi are still deprived of availing the full benefit of the multi-billion rupee service because of non-execution of a planned merger of two major lines — Green and Orange. The delay has kept around over a million Karachiites away from enjoying an economical and comfortable travelling service, it emerged on Thursday. Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister retired Justice Maqbool Baqar termed the situation ‘not satisfactory’ when he was informed about the progress during a meeting held at CM House to review different projects of the Transport & Mass Transit Department. It came out during the meeting that the potential of the BRT system could not be exploited to the full depriving a large number of Karachiites of an economical public transport facility.
