Motorway IG orders strict enforcement of traffic rules

LAHORE: The National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) will further enhance the capacity and professionalism of the officers, and also adopt zero-tolerance policy against traffic violations.NH&MP Inspector General Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan said this during his first visit to the NH&MP Complex at Babu Sabu, Lahore. LAHORE: The chief traffic officer (CTO) dismissed a traffic warden from service on charges of forging 297 files of driving licences.A case against the accused warden, Fasihul Zaman, has also been registered at the Lower Mall police station. Builder kidnapped in DHA last month recovered

The Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of the Crime Investigation Agency Karachi on Friday claimed to have recovered a businessman who was kidnapped more than a month ago and arrested one of his abductors.According to AVCC SSP Irfan Ali Bahadur, Abdul Latif, a known builder, was kidnapped by three unidentified suspects from his office at Murtaza Commercial Area in DHA Phase-VIII.The suspects had used a fake registration plate on the vehicle that they used in the kidnapping. An FIR was ultimately lodged at the Sahil police station after Latif’s family received a call demanding Rs60 million in ransom for his release.The SSP further said that a joint investigation team was formed under his supervision comprising members of the AVCC and the Citizen Police Liaison Committee.The investigators carried out various raids on specific locations but remained unsuccessful in locating the kidnappers and Latif. Sindh Chief Secretary (CS) Major (retd) Azam Suleman Khan directed the officials concerned to reconstitute a task force on the Supreme Court-mandated water commission and to take deputy commissioners of District Malir and South on board for better coordination in order to implement the recommendations made by the body.The directives were given during a meeting at the secretary’s office on Friday.  PARIS: An international group that monitors money laundering worldwide said on Friday Iran had until October to complete reforms that would bring it into line with global norms or face consequences that could further deter investors from the country. GAZA:  Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinians, one of them a 14 year-old boy, and wounded 415 others with live fire and tear gas during protests along the Gaza border on Friday, Gaza health officials said.Gaza medical officials said the boy, Yasser Abu Al-Naja and Mohammad Al-Hamayda, 24, were hit by live bullets. They added that four other men wounded by live fire were in critical condition. Gaza City, Palestinian Territories: Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinians, one in his early teens, in border clashes Friday in the southern Gaza Strip, health ministry said.Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP a Palestinian youth aged about 13 was shot in the head near the town of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, without giving his name or exact age.He added that 24-year-old Mohammed al-Hamayda had died after being hit in the stomach by Israeli fire in a separate incident east of Rafah.The Israeli army gave no immediate comment.Since protests broke out along the Gaza border on March 30, at least 137 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire.The majority were involved in protests but others were seeking to breach or damage the border fence.No Israelis have been killed.On Thursday, Abdel Fattah Abu Azoum, 17, was hit in the head by fire from an Israeli tank near Rafah in southern Gaza.The Israeli army said he and a companion were trying to break through the border fence. fr

Three babies dead, 100 missing in migrant shipwreck off Libya

Al-Hmidiya , Libya: The lifeless bodies of three babies were brought ashore in Libya on Friday, victims of a Mediterranean migrant shipwreck in which survivors say 100 people are still missing.Around 120 migrants were aboard the inflatable craft when it ran into trouble, according to survivors taken to Al-Hmidiya, east of the capital Tripoli.Sixteen people were rescued, while the missing included two babies and three children under the age of 12.Survivors told AFP the boat sank a few hours after its pre-dawn departure from Garaboulli, east of Tripoli, following an explosion on board.The motor then caught fire and the vessel began taking on water, they said.The passengers included several Moroccan families, none of whom survived."When I saw the number of people on the boat, I refused to get on board, because we had been told that we would be 20 (passengers)," said survivor Amri Swileh, from Yemen.Showing his bruised arms, the 26-year-old said he was threatened by smugglers and

MANAMA, Saudi Arabia: To celebrate the end of decades’ old ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia, a young woman named Leesa has released a rap song “We Are Driving”.In her  song, Leesa celebrates the glory of the historic 10/10 date that refers to the tenth day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, the day when the ban was lifted. “Don’t forget that today is the tenth day and this means no need for taxis. Pakistani road safety video spread In India as Whatsapp rumours spark mob attacks

Rumours spread through Whatspp messages and videos have sparked mob attacks in India, killing a woman and injuring many other people in different parts of India over past few days.According to  a news agency, several attacks were triggered by a viral message spread trough Whatsapp alleging that hundreds of people have entered Gujarat to abduct and sell children.The videos doing the round on the Whatsapp also include one from Pakistan. The news agency reported that the Pakistani video is actually a road safety video that has been circulated by users . The video is of a child apparently being kidnapped by two men on motorbikes. Caretaker CM denies extension to BoGs

Budget for WSSP approved

PESHAWAR: The board of directors of Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) Friday approved the budget for the fiscal year 2018-19 with a total outlay of Rs3.362 billion.The budget session of the board of directors was held with Engineer Tahir Azeem in the chair.The meeting was attended by other members of the board including Dr Mohammad Iqbal Khalil, Dr Rashid Rehan, Dr Bushra Khan, Syed Shah Nasir, Khurshed Khan, representative of finance and local government departments and chief executive of the company Engineer Khan Zeb.According to the budgetary estimates, an amount of Rs 2.7 billion has been allocated for operational charges and Rs650 million for development purposes. CTD arrests terrorist behind suicide attack on ex-minister

PESHAWAR: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police arrested an alleged terrorist involved in the suicide attack on former provincial minister Israrullah Khan Gandapur, an official said on Friday.An official of the CTD said that Ali Mar Shah, a resident of Tank district, was arrested during an action in Dera Ismail Khan. The official said the accused was wanted by the police in connection with the suicide attack on the then provincial minister Israrullah Gandapur.The attack had taken place on October 16, 2013 in which Israrullah Gandapur was killed along with several other people. Compliant taxpayers declare over Rs2trln worth of assets under amnesty

KARACHI: A much-touted tax amnesty scheme, likely to conclude today, mostly attracted existing taxpayers who so far declared around two trillion rupees of their previously-hidden local and foreign assets, officials said on Friday.The officials said the compliant taxpayers form majority of the people who availed the tax amnesty for undisclosed foreign and domestic assets.“New taxpayers are very few in the total declarations filed so far under the amnesty scheme,” an official of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said.“Most of existing taxpayers are availing the amnesty. KARACHI: Pakistan’s depleting foreign reserves brought the country’s import cover down to 1.8 months and the country may soon need to seek $10 to 15 billion of bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), analysts said on Friday.“Looking at history, it looks like Pakistan usually rushes to IMF when the forex reserves fall below 2 months of goods imports,” Executive Director - Research at Insight Securities Zeeshan Afzal said in an economic outlook. “Currently, the country has 1.8 months of import cover, and the finance managers have started hinting at possible negotiation with the IMF.”The country’s foreign exchange reserves fell 3.3 percent to $16.243 billion during the week ended June 22.Afzal expected the country to back to its usual lender of last resort for up to $15 billion bailout package, “which would also bring more loans flows from other lenders”.“However, the bailout would be contingent upon very strong commitment to reforms as under normal course IMF lends up

KARACHI: Pakistan has vowed to address the strategic deficiencies identified by the global financial system watchdog in the country’s compliance with the standards of anti-money laundering (AML) and combating the financing of terrorism (CFT).The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Friday said Pakistan provided “a written high-level political commitment to address the identified deficiencies”.“The FATF calls on [Pakistan] to complete the implementation of action plan expeditiously and within the proposed timeframe,” said the taskforce that works to identify the risks to the international financial system.A Pakistani delegation attended the FATF six-day plenary meeting, which concluded on Friday, to submit its action plan to curb money laundering and terror financing. ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation for the week ended on June 28 for the combined income groups witnessed increase of 0.07 percent as compared to the previous week.The SPI for the week under review in the above mentioned group was recorded at 230.25 points against 230.09 points last week, according todata released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined group in the week under review witnessed increase of 4.02 percent. The rupee closed higher against the dollar on Friday on the back of soft dollar demand from importers, dealers said.The rupee closed at 121.49 to the dollar as compared to 121.54 in the interbank market. However, the currency lost ground in the open market due to fresh surge in the dollar demand. In the open market, the rupee ended at 124/124.50 against the dollar. It traded at 123.40/123.80 in the previous session.Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves fell 3.30 percent to $16.243 billion during the week ended June 22, according to the data released by the central bank on Thursday.The reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) decreased $602 million on weekly basis.
