Courts in the United Kingdom and Lahore are “involved in a complex legal tussle” to decide what should happen to the siblings of Sara Sharif, whose death sparked an international manhunt, BBC reported. Sara Sharif’s body was discovered at her home in Woking, southern England, on August 10. A post-mortem examination found she had sustained “multiple and extensive injuries” over a long period. The day before Sara’s body was found, her father, 41-year-old Urfan Sharif, her step-mother Beinash Batool, 29, and his brother Faisal Malik, 28, had left the UK for Pakistan with five other children. They were arrested in September after disembarking from a flight from Dubai and pleaded not guilty. The trial is expected to start in September 2024 and it is expected to last six weeks. GUJRAT: Police raided the Zahoor Elahi House in the city on the last day of submission of nomination papers on Sunday. ISLAMABAD: As more than 100 Baloch students reportedly remain missing in the aftermath of a crackdown on their long march, the police on Sunday set up a ‘special help centre’ for the release of the incarcerated individuals. The long march — which started in Turbat on December 6 after the alleged “extra-judicial killing” of a Baloch youth by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials — had reached the federal capital on Wednesday. PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has started the ball rolling on the regular appointment of vice-chancellors to the province’s 16 public sector universities by appointing the chairman and two members to the academic search committee for recommending names to fill vacancies. LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has restrained the caretaker government of Punjab from constructing a skateboard park in Bagh-i-Jinnah, also known as Lawrence Garden, and got the whole park declared special premises under the law. Syed Qamar Mehdi, a regular visitor to the garden, approached the court through a public interest petition against an order by Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) allowing a skateboard park in Bagh-i-Jinnah, a 19th century garden. Justice Shahid Jamil Khan heard the petition and examined the Parks and Horticulture Act, 2012, which revealed that Lawrence Garden is a heritage park under the law. The government’s lawyer told the court that the garden had already been declared as “special premises”, through a notification of 1985, issued under Section 2(a) of the Punjab Special Premises (Preservation) Ordinance, 1985. LAHORE: As many as 26,557 officials and personnel have been deployed for the security of 3,286 churches across the province. On the instructions of Inspector General Police Dr Usman Anwar, Punjab Police has finalised the plan for the security of Christian worship places and sensitive installations in connection with the Christmas. A police spokesman said 2,335 CCTV cameras, 3,427 metal detectors and hundreds of walk-through gates would be used for the security of Christian citizens. He said 3,422 officers and personnel, 271 metal detectors and 236 CCTV cameras will be used in the provincial capital while women personnel will also be deployed. The spokesperson said the police has divided 3,286 churches of the province into A, B and C categories.
