Veteran TV actor Shakeel passes away at age 85 in Karachi

Veteran TV actor Yousuf Kamal, better known as Shakeel, passed away at CMH hospital in Karachi following brief illness on Thursday — the first day of Eidul Azha — state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported citing a member of his family. He was 85. Shakeel was known for his “impeccable acting skills and attained prominence with his memorable roles in various television dramas”, the report added. According to a 2012 profile of Shakeel published in Dawn, he ruled the mini screen, and in his prime no drama serial was complete without him. Born in Bhopal, India in 1938, Shakeel moved to Pakistan with his family in 1952 and started his career on the big screen with the 1966 film Honehar, where he shared the screen with Waheed Murad. However, he found his true calling on the TV screen where he was a part of many hits, including Uncle Urfi (1972), Ankahi (1982) and Aangan Terha (1984). In 2015, the then Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad had conferred the prestigious Sita

Military still fulfilling legal formalities for May 9 trials

• Army’s Judge Advocate General branch currently doing ‘homework’ on suspects • Legal experts say ordinary courts can try such cases if empowered by govt ISLAMABAD: Though the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of petitions challenging the trials of civilians in military courts, the army’s legal wing is still in the process of completing codal formalities before formal proceedings against the 102 suspects in their custody can begin, Dawn has learnt. Informed sources said that the military’s legal department has gathered evidence against those in custody, while it is building cases against those still at large. Earlier this week, Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial had expressed the hope that the military would not begin legal proceedings against those in its custody until the court had disposed of the petitions — assailing military trials of civilians — that are currently pending before the CJP-led bench. However, on the same day, the military’s chief spokesperson

SC rejects plea to structure SJC discretion

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a plea to structure the discretion of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) with an observation that the propositions advanced were not tenable or had merit. On June 13, a two-judge SC bench consisting of Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar had reserved its ruling on a petition moved by Advocate Hina Jilani representing a number of civil society activists namely Afiya Shehrbano Zia, Afrasiab Khattak, M. Ziauddin, Farhatullah Babar, Nighat Said Khan, Farida Shaheed, Rubina Saigol and Bushra Gauhar. The counsel had argued before the Supreme Court that a judge accused of misconduct was a burden on the exchequer if he finally reached superannuation despite the fact that the SJC was seized with a complaint against the judge. On Oct 10, 2018, a total of 98 citizens, including the petitioners, had filed a complaint against then chief justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar under Article 209 of the Constitution over alleged breach

AJK PM inducts 27 more members into cabinet

MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq on Sunday inducted 27 more members in his cabinet which comprised only two ministers since the installation of his government more than two months ago. The formation of the huge cabinet, which would be followed by appointments of at least four advisers/special assistants with the status of minister, comes less than a week after his government passed a Rs232 billion budget with a staggering Rs42bn deficit. The new ministers were administered oath by President Barrister Sultan Mahmood at the new PM House in the presence of PM Haq, Legislative Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar and a sizable number of political activists. Mr Haq had appointed Waqar Ahmed Noor of PML-N and Raja Faisal Rathore of PPP as ministers without portfolio hours after assuming the office on April 20 at the head of a coalition government, comprising his strong group of PTI renegades and previously opposition PPP and PML-N parti

Drama outside Lal Masjid brings back painful memories

ISLAMABAD: Lal Masjid’s Maulana Abdul Aziz dodged arrest on Wednesday after his guards put up resistance to the police party when he came out of the mosque after leading Zuhr prayers despite a ban on him from the authorities. Soon after, female students of Jamia Hafsa blocked several roads, including Jinnah Avenue and the bridge near Kulsoom Plaza, to protest against the attempted arrest of the cleric. However, confusion and lack of clarity persisted over the entire episode as statements and versions from both the police and Lal Masjid failed to answer several questions. Situated at the centre of the capital city, Lal Masjid came to prominence when the then military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf carried out a full-fledged military operation in July 2007. Talking to Dawn, a senior official of the capital administration acknowledged that a team of Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) had gone to Lal Masjid to talk to the Maulana and ask him to present himself for clearing certain quer

Polio campaign kicks off in parts of Sindh, KP today

ISLAMABAD: Provincial polio programmes have finalised the arrangements to hold vaccination campaigns in selected districts of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from today (Monday). Around four million children, up to five years of age, will be vaccinated during the campaign, Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) spokesperson Sajid Shah said while talking to Dawn. He added that all arrangements for the campaigns have been made by the provinces. “Around 369 union councils in 15 districts of KP and 119 UCs of nine districts of Sindh have been selected for the campaign,” Mr Shah told Dawn. “The target is over 2.1m children in KP and over 1.8m children in Sindh.” An official of the National Institute of Health (NIH), said the campaign has been planned after the polio virus was recently detected in a sewage sample from Karachi. Around 488 UCs in 24 districts will be covered; 4m children to be inoculated “Although we were getting positive environmental samples from some areas

Drap chief accused of running Benami pharmaceutical company

ISLAMABAD: An officer of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) has written a letter to the secretary health alleging that the chief executive officer of the organisation was running a Benami pharmaceutical company, which was a clear case of conflict of interest. However, Drap CEO Asim Rauf said the officer was habitual of filing frivolous complaints and the authority had decided to take strict action against him. Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) spokesman Sajid Shah said such allegations were levelled against most of the CEOs of Drap in the past but none of them could be proved. In the letter, available with Dawn, Drap’s Deputy Director in Quetta Dr Mohammad Aleem Akhter claimed that the CEO had committed a number of irregularities since his appointment as the deputy drugs controller in BPS-18 in the year 2002. PM’s aide Irfan Qadir urges judiciary to hold its own to account

LAHORE: Warning that judges who were involved in corruption or exceeding their constitutional domain would face action, the PM’s aide on accountability Irfan Qadir said on Saturday that both serving and retired judges could be held accountable for their actions. Addressing a press conference at Governor House, he told the judiciary that it should not pursue ‘a parallel agenda’ and urged it to conduct hearings into the allegations levelled against a former chief justice, as well as a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. Lamenting a lack of action against ex-CJP Saqib Nisar, Mr Qadir said the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) appeared to have become “completely ineffective”. Mr Qadir also advised Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to remove differences among his judges. Irfan Qadir calls on CJP to remove differences among SC judges; says Supreme Judicial Council rendered ‘ineffective’ “The SJC’s performance slowed down when the petition against Saqib Nisar was moved. Life returns to normal as Biparjoy dissipates

• Minister says Pakistan was prepared, but largely spared • Ban on going into open sea lifted; seawater starts receding from Keti Bandar KETI BANDAR: Life began returning to normal on Sindh’s coast after days of panic and preparations ahead of Biparjoy’s landfall, with the storm packing sustained winds of up to 125 kilometres per hour as it struck India’s Gujarat on Thursday, but then weakening overnight. More than 180,000 people in Sindh and the neighbouring Indian state of Gujarat fled the path of Biparjoy — which means “disaster” in Bengali — before it made landfall. Pakistan was largely spared of the storm’s effects and no lives were lost. However, water levels did increase in some coastal areas. “Pakistan was prepared but largely spared the full force,” Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman tweeted on Friday morning. “Sindh’s coastal areas like Sujawal were inundated by high sea levels, but most people had been evacuated to safe ground.” The authorities

Amid protests, Murtaza Wahab becomes Karachi mayor

KARACHI: Murtaza Wahab was elected as the first Pakistan Peoples Party mayor of Karachi on Thursday, after the day was marred by controversy, recriminations and protests. The mayoral election was expected to be a tough fight between Mr Wahab and Jamaat-i-Islami’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, both of whom claimed numerical superiority in the run-up to the election. View this post on Instagram The PPP had formed an alliance with PML-N and JUI-F, taking their combined strength to 173, while the JI had the support of 61 PTI members, taking the expected number of votes for Mr Rehman to 192. But while Mr Wahab secured all 173 expected votes, Mr Rehman only managed to get 160 after 30 union council members abstained from the polling process. JI rejects elections, calls for countrywide demonstrations The slot of deputy mayor also went to PPP’s Salman Abdullah Murad, who bagged 173 votes, with JI’s Saif-ud-din securing 160 votes. Power outages at Drap lab compromising vaccines, medicines

ISLAMABAD: The National Control Laboratory for Biologics (NCLB), a research facility run by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap), does not have a generator to skirt power outages, and the temperature fluctuation is compromising the quality of vaccines and medicine stored in the lab. This was revealed during a visit of the Senate Committee on National Health Services to the lab based in Chak Shehzad where it was briefed by the NCLB and Drap officials on various aspects, including the budget for upgrading health labs. During the visit of the Senate panel headed by Humayun Mohmand, the facility did not have any power, prompting the senators to inquire about the availability of an alternative power source. Mr Mohmand termed it a serious matter and said the “vaccines were being turned into poison” due to the frequent fluctuations in temperature. The committee, chaired by Senator Humayun Mohmand, raised serious concerns about the absence of a generator at the facility am

Tariq Malik resigns as Nadra chief

ISLAMABAD: Tariq Malik on Tuesday resigned from his position as chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), a year before the completion of his three-year term. The resignation was submitted by him during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The resignation came months after a controversy over the leak of data regarding the family of a army chief, entailing action against some employees by Mr Malik. “I find it increasingly difficult to work in a charged and polarised political environment. It is difficult for any professional to maintain his integrity and independence in an environment that constantly pigeon-holes people in an ‘us versus them’ logic and where political loyalty is privileged over competence,” read the three-page resignation, whose copy is available with Dawn. Mr Malik in his resignation pleaded to the prime minister not to appoint a serving or retired bureaucrat as his replacement and instead pick a professional and technical p

Maryam says Imran ‘revolted’ against state after ouster

MULTAN: PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Sunday lambasted PTI Chairman Imran Khan and said the former prime minister had “revolted against the state and attacked its institutions” after being removed from power through a parliamentary vote of no-confidence. Addressing a PML-N youth convention in Shujaabad, a district in Multan, the PML-N chief organiser said the PTI chairman had “set the country on fire” and his supporters desecrated memorials of martyrs on May 9 after he was detained by Rangers in a NAB case. “His own sons are living in the UK but [he] handed over matchboxes, batons, and petrol bombs to his party workers to set the army installation on fire after he was arrested in a corruption case [on May 9],” the PML-N leader alleged. View this post on Instagram Ms Nawaz also used the opportunity to take swipes at her rival, especially in light of desertions and said Mr Khan’s party was reduced to such a small number that it could be

Coastal areas vulnerable as cyclone changes course

KARACHI: There is a potential threat of flooding in Pakistan’s coastal areas in the coming days after Biparjoy — a very severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea — changed its direction on the night between June 8 and June 9. The storm is likely to keep moving in the north/northeastward direction during the next 36-48 hours, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) officials said on Friday, adding that Biparjoy is likely to maintain its intensity in the coming days. “The current environmental conditions, including the sea surface temperature of 30-32°C, low vertical wind shear and upper-level divergence, are still supporting the system to intensify further. “Owing to shift in upper-level steering winds, the uncertainty in global models forecast of the system still persists, though, with some taking it to Oman-Pakistan Makran coast and others indicating towards Indian Gujarat-Pakistan Sindh coast,” Chief Meteorologist Dr S. CJ Bandial deplores protests at Supreme Court gates

ISLAMABAD: Without pointing fingers at anyone, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial on Wednesday wondered what those holding protests at the Supreme Court gates on May 15 had gained, other than hampering the process of justice. “This is not right, since dispensation of justice is the virtue of Allah Almighty and any interference entails ‘consequences’,” the CJP remarked while heading a three-judge bench that had taken up Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) review petition against the April 4 verdict of fixing May 14 as the date for holding Punjab Assembly elections. The remarks were an indirect reference to the PDM-sponsored protests and sit-in staged on the Constitution Avenue, right in front of the apex court gates meant exclusively for the use of judges, to demand the CJP’s immediate resignation. Justice Bandial, however, appreciated the government’s initiative of enacting the SC Review of Judgments and Orders Act, 2023 after realising that constitutional in

World Environment Day being observed today

ISLAMABAD: With ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ this year’s theme, the World Environment Day, the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment, will be observed today (Monday). The theme for 2023 World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution”, which calls for urgent solutions to combat plastic pollution. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled while an estimated 19 to 23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said in a statement issued on eve of the World Environment Day. Pakistan has established the National Plastic Action Partnership to provide platform of action for plastic waste management. A major outcome of this will be the creation and implementation of a circular economy framework to reduce plastic waste and pollution. Shehbaz

Justice Isa rubbishes impression of creating ‘separate group’ within SC

A SCREENGRAB taken from a video recorded on Friday shows Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial planting a sapling in the lawns of the Supreme Court building. ISLAMABAD: After Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial and senior puisne judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa planted flower plants on the lawns of the Supreme Court on Friday as part of the spring tree plantation drive, the latter rubbished the impression that he had intentionally “created a separate group of judges” within the top court. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah also attended the small ceremony, during which judges also exchanged pleasantries and offered prayers. “It is a smart move to quell the impression that there is a wide gulf between the judges of the Supreme Court,” suggested a senior counsel on condition of anonymity. It was Justice Mansoor Ali Shah who suggested that both CJP and Justice Isa should plant the first flower plant on the lawns, and b

Isa-led body takes issue with hearing of pleas by CJP-headed bench

• Panel on audio leaks maintains challenges to its formation not taken up as per SC (Practice & Procedure) Act • IHC stays proceedings of NA body probing audio of ex-CJP’s son ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has adjourned until next week the hearing of challenges against a government-notified commission to investigate audio leaks, after the fact-finding body objected to the proceedings, saying that they did not conform with the requirements of a newly-passed law. The operation of the Supreme Court (Practice & Procedure) Act 2023, which was passed by parliament in March this year, was stayed by an eight-member bench of the apex court, led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on April 13. Among other changes to the CJP’s discretionary powers, the bill envisioned that every clause, appeal or matter before the Supreme Court shall be heard and disposed of by a bench constituted by the committee comprising the CJP and two senior judges, in order of seniority.
