PTI makes one more bid to woo NA speaker

ISLAMABAD: In another bid to convince Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to allow Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders to return to the lower house of parliament, a 20-member delegation led by party stalwart Malik Amir Dogar called on the National Assembly speaker and urged him to reverse his decision regarding the acceptance of resignations. Mr Dogar, the former chief whip of the party, informed the speaker that the Lahore High Court had restored the membership of PTI MNAs so their resignations should also be withdrawn, according to separate statements issued by both sides after the meeting. The PTI also demanded that the new opposition leader should be appointed after the restoration of PTI lawmakers’ membership so that the process for the appointment of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chief could be started. The former ruling party also sought the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee currently headed by Noor Alam Khan, a dissident PTI leader. During the meeting at Parliam

Closure of Torkham border intensifies woes of traders, transporters

KHYBER: The closure of the Torkham border for the fifth consecutive day intensified the financial and physical woes of traders, transporters and pedestrians as confusion prevailed on Thursday as Afghan authorities reopened their side of the border and Pakistani authorities insisted that they would follow suit after a formal meeting between officials of both countries. Assistant Commissioner Irshad Momand told Dawn that they were still not given any information from the Afghan side as to why actually the border was closed by them on Sunday night and what prompted them to reopen it on Thursday. He said that as per border protocols, a formal meeting between the officials of both countries was yet to take place to remove the misunderstandings, devising a proper plan for pedestrian movement on both sides of the border. “We are still to take up the actual issue at a proper forum and then move forward with a mutually agreed plan for the future,” he said while clarifying why Pakistan had

PM, Maryam pressurising judges to avoid polls: Imran

LAHORE: PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N chief organiser Maryam Nawaz of putting pressure on the superior judiciary to avoid general elections to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies within the constitutional time frame of 90 days. “They are attacking the judiciary to blackmail and pressurise the judges,” he said in a televised address from his Zaman Park residence. “This is a defining moment in Pakistan and the country’s superior judiciary must stand tall and ensure that Article 224 of the constitution is exercised in its true spirit,” Mr Khan urged the judges. He said only a free and fair general election could help steer the country out of the economic and political crises. “The PTI sacrificed its two provincial governments that constitute 60 per cent of Pakistan, just to make way for elections to restore political stability, which will eventually bring economic stability in the country,” he explained. Mr Kha

Six alleged terrorists affiliated with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Counter-Terrorism Department and police in a joint intelligence-based operation in Lakki Marwat, the police said on Thursday. In a statement issued today, Lakki Marwat police spokesperson Shahid Hameed said that the operation was conducted in the jurisdiction of the Dadiwala police station after security personnel got a tip-off that terrorists were planning an attack on the Abbas police checkpost. “When the security teams reached the terrorists’ hideout, they opened fire at police officials from multiple directions. Hameed said that when the firing stopped, the police searched the site and found the bodies of six terrorists. “A huge cache of loaded arms, ammunition and grenades were recovered from their possession.” Four of the slain terrorists have been identified as Ziaullah, Safatullah, Mohibullah and Kaleemullah.

Case registered against Islamabad teacher for torturing differently-abled children

ISLAMABAD: The capital police on Wednesday registered a case at the Industrial Area police station against a teacher involved in the torture of differently-abled students at a special education centre in Sector H-9 whereas a lawmaker demanded the transfer of the centre from the human rights ministry to the education ministry. The National Institute of Special Education located in H-9 should have been a part of the education ministry but former education minister Shafqat Mehmood committed a “blunder” and placed the institution under the administrative control of the human rights ministry, said Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Justice Mehnaz Akber Aziz while speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly. The lawmaker said that she visited the centre to inquire about the issue which resulted in the suspension of the official involved in the torture. “All institutions meant for the differently-abled students should be made part of the education ministry,” she demanded and co

Balochistan minister Khetran arrested on suspicion of killing 3 people: police

Balochistan Minister for Communication and Works Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran was arrested on Wednesday on “suspicion of killing three people” in the province’s Barkhan district, police said. The arrest comes after bullet-riddled bodies of a woman and her two sons were found from a well near the minister’s residence in the Barkhan area late on Monday night. Khan Muhammad Marri, a citizen, has alleged that the bodies were of his wife and two sons. “These are the bodies of my wife and two sons who were kept in a private jail in Haji Kot for the last four years,” he said, identifying them as his 40-year-old wife Granaz, and sons Muhammad Anwar (22) and Abdul Qadir (15). Marri alleged that his wife and sons were being held in Khetran’s private jail, adding that five more of his children, including his 13-year-old daughter, were still languishing there. It is pertinent to mention that the minister has denied the allegation and termed the entire incident as “propaganda created to tarn
