Ministry takes flak for not utilising funds

Islamabad : The Senate's Functional Committee on Human Rights on Wednesday took notice of non-utilisation of funds by the Ministry of Human Rights.The committee, which met here with Senator Quratulain Marri in the chair, discussed Arsh and Daman funds maintained by the human rights ministry, a Senate press release said.When informed that Rs45 million remained dormant, the committee showed concern over the ministry's claims that it did not come across ample number of cases for which funds might be disbursed.The committee also noted that less meetings were being held by the ministry despite rules requiring the same to convene on a quarterly basis.It recommended that the ministry must organise jail visits and must coordinate with the jail superintendents to obtain lists of prisoners in the country so that they could be helped accordingly.Reviewing details of the Human Rights Relief and Revolving Fund, the committee stressed the need to revisit rules so that its allocation might be

NDMA chief says no serious threat of severe floods in monsoon

Factory closure: Over 200 workers go on hunger strike

HARIPUR: Over 200 workers of a fertilisers manufacturing unit on Wednesday went on a hunger strike against the closure of the factory.After a scuffle between some senior managers of the Agritech Industry Pvt Ltd and workers on May 8, the management had closed down the factory, rendering over 200 workers jobless. Both sides had lodged first information reports against each other. Those nominated in the FIRs have been on bail since then, according to the police record.Despite efforts, the factory management did not show a willingness to resume the production process as it did not agree on reinstating a dozen union members who had allegedly attacked the management on May 8.During this period, the workers kept on protesting against the factory management and set up a protest camp outside the factory gate.While on the other hand, district administration and political leadership also failed to persuade the management due to which the workers decided to go on hunger strike.During the first da

Old price of roti restored, action against violators on, PHC told

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) was told on Wednesday that the district administration has restored the old price of Rs10 per roti and action was being taken against the violators.Deputy Advocate General Rabnawaz Khan told a division bench comprising Justice Lal Jan Khattak and Justice Muhammad Ibrahim Khan that the decision to increase the price of roti from Rs10 to Rs15 by the district administration has been withdrawn.The law officer, representing the government, submitted that now the nanbais were bound to sell a roti of 130 grams for Rs10.He also informed the bench that the district administration had charged and sent hundreds of nanbais to prison, who were not selling roti on Rs10 and the action continues. 12 injured as jeep falls into ravine

MANSEHRA: Twelve persons, including three women and four children, were seriously injured when a jeep plunged into a ravine in Balakot on Tuesday. The driver of jeep, which was on its way to Balakot from Jujan village, lost control over steering while negotiating a sharp turn.The locals rushed to scene and shifted the injured to civil hospital in Balakot from where doctors referred them to Ayub Medical Complex in Abbottabad following emergency treatment. PESHAWAR: Noted scholar Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi has asked the government to reopen the shrine of Badshah Mir Anwar Shah Syed Mian in Orakzai tribal district.He made the demand while talking to a delegation of the shrine caretakers. CHITRAL: A police constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his official pistol on the premises of the Police Lines early Tuesday, official said.Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Zafar Ahmed said that Nazarban Shah, police constable, hailing from Garam Chasham, Mogh, was found dead on the premises of the Police Lines.He said that apparently he had fired at himself in the head at around 4am. The DSP added that the body was shifted to the hospital for medico-legal proceeding and proper investigation would be conducted into the case. Boy killed after being hit by stray bullet

PESHAWAR: A 13-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a stray bullet here. Noor Shahid Shah, a student of grade-8, was playing with his friends when the stray bullet hit him. He was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries. People on the social media demanded a ban on the festive firing as well as introducing strict laws to go after those involved in this menace after provincial minister Taimur Khan Jhagra posted about the incident, saying some of the traditions really need to be changed.
